Environmental Intelligence Grand Challenge 2020

For the Environmental Intelligence Grand Challenge 2020, I was part of the Pollen Forecasting Team. The project aimed to develop a statistical model to predict daily average air concentration of pollen grains, making use of the day of the year and meteorological variables, with pollen observation available for training and validation.

My work package during the grand challenge was to determine and visualise the pollen season. A review of the literature determined that there were broadly speaking three levels of pollen concentration that caused symptoms based on clinical trials, specifically Low, Medium and High. The final visualisation created:

As can be seen, not every type of pollen has a high season at all and doesn’t meet the need threshold on any days of the year. Work conducted also calculated the pollen season in specific cities within the UK.
